Another art form which I enjoy making is stain glass. I will be the first to admit my pieces are not very detailed or precise. Now my son Dan’s stain glass pieces are superb! His attention to detail is impeccable.
However, I do like to dapple in stain glass despite the amount of “work” and how messy it can get. Let me continue with the story of my stain glass creations. It started when my front door stain glass needed to be repaired. Instead of having a professional repair it at an expensive price, my husband, Chris, and I took a stain making class. He of course had a wonderful way of cutting the glass and soldering (being an Engineer with experience of soldering electronic components for aircraft…… need I say more?) At any rate, the door came out well, and I learned a new art form.
There are three things I love about stain glass. First of course are the colors of the glass and how beautifully the light shines through. Second, I love to give my glass pieces away as little gifts. The majority of my stain glass making has taken the form of Christmas tree decorations which I make for my family. (I like this better than making Christmas cookies – but for sure it takes longer). Now that brings me to the third thing about stain glass making. I like the happenstance creativity of what each piece turns out to be. For sure, each piece of stain glass art is unique on to itself.
I guess I started making Christmas ornaments after I took the stain glass class, because they were smaller to make, and because I like to give home-made things to those close to me. I see that my first piece was made in 1993 – and have 22 years making them. I usually get busy as a bee in mid-November in an attempt to think of something original and get into the “production” mode. I make at least four of the “same year” decorations for my loved ones and one for me. (I place mine in front of a light on the tree).
One year, I did not make an ornament and I got complaining repercussions from my recipients, so the next year I had to come up with another Christmas theme idea. Sometimes I have to repeated an idea – like a candle, a star, a tree.
By far my biggest piece and the one I am most proud of is my bedroom porch stain glass. The sunlight colors come in beautifully as I sit on the glider either having my morning coffee or my evening glass of beer or wine. The nicest colors are in the evening as I sit facing west and the piece is able to capture the magnificent sunset rays.
Chris made me the wood frame which I requested based on the dimensions in planning my piece. It took me a while to complete it, as I would put it aside while other things in my life took priority. Coming up with the hardware to hold it in place was interesting but I came up with a way to secure it in place and protect it from the strong winds that roll up my backyard hill.
I’ve also made a flower arrangement which sits on a side table and a hanging flower that hangs in my large window in my bathroom.
I only made four of these night lights, two years ago, but I still have some more of the electrical plug components to hold the stain glass. I’ll make them again. They came out well and were easy to make.
